The Tanner Community Resource Center was established in 2000 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization.  It was born out of a vision of John and Jean Shannon, long-standing members of St. Paul United Methodist Church, to utilize the Tanner property as an outreach arm of St. Paul.

The Tanner property was the home of the late Eston and Thelma Tanner.  Mr. Tanner grew up and lived next door to St. Paul all of his life.  Mrs. Tanner also grew up in St. Paul. The couple married in their early 20’s and were active in the life of the church. Both served in many ministries and several leadership positions. Prior to Mrs. Tanner’s death in 1998, she sold the property to St. Paul.

At a June 1999 Church Council meeting, an exploratory committee was formed to determine how best to utilize the property. The committee’s work evolved with recommen-dations and an implementation committee replaced the exploratory committee to create a tax exempt non-profit 501(c)(3) organization under the IRS Code.

TCRC was incorporated in November 1999. The renovations and décor to convert the Tanners’ home into the community center you see today were completed largely by labor and materials donated by dedicated St. Paul members.

Reverend Mary Brown Oliver led the consecration and grand opening ribbon cutting on March 25, 2000.
